Composition
Each 100 gm contains:
Sulphadimidine sodium 86.00 gm
Equivalent to Sulphadimidine base 80.00 gm
Diaveridine 8.00 gm
Properties
Sulphonamides are corrective antagonists of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and thus prevent normal bacterial utilization of PABA for the synthesis of folic acid (bacteriostatic effect).
- Sulphadimidine inhibits not only bacteria but also protozoal agents such as coccidia.
- Sulphonamides act especially on the 2nd generation schizont. This stage is important for the development of natural immunity, so sulphonamides hardly influence development of natural immunity.
- Diaveridine is active against the protozoan enzyme dihydrofolate reductase.
- Diaveridine has synergetic activity with Sulphonamides.
- Antimicrobial spectrum: Sulfonamides inhibit both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, a few Chlamydia, Nocardia, Actinomyces spp, and some protozoa such as coccidia and Toxoplasma spp. More active sulfonamides may include several species of Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Pasteurella, and even Escherichia coli in their spectra.
