Composition:

Each100 gm contains
Spectinomycin              50 gm

(as Dihydrochloride pentahydrate)

Properties:

  • Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic which acts by binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis.
  • Spectinomycin resembles aminoglycosids in some properties .It is highly water soluble and easily mixed with aqueous solutions. Compared with aminoglycosides, it doesnot contain amino sugars or glycosidic bonds, but it has an aminocyclitol nucleus likeaminoglycosides.An important difference between Spectinomycin and aminoglycosides is in the adverse effect and spectrum of activity.
  • Spectinomycin lakes the toxic effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics and can be used without the concern about renal injury.
  • Spectinomycin has minimal activity against anaerobes, most strains of Pseudomonas, Chlamydia, or Treponema.
  • Spectinomycin has a limited activity against gram negative and less activity against gram positive organisms. It has a good activity against Mycoplasma species

Indications:

Medspectam : is used for chickens and turkey:

  • For air sacculitis associated with M.meleagridis or CRD associated with E.coli in turkey.
  • For control and to lessen mortality due to infections from M. synoviae, S.typhimurium, S. infantis and E.coli in newly hatched chicks.
  • For control of CRD associated with M.gallisepticum in broilers.
  • For infectious synovitis associated with M.synoviae

Dosage and Administration:

Chickens and turkey:

1 – 2 gm Medspectam / 2 liter drinking water once daily for 3 – 5days.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Antagonism has been reported when Spectinomycinis used with chloramphinicol or tetracycline.

Contra – Indications

  • Hypersensitivity to Spectinomycin
  • Not used for layers

Side Effects

  • Appears to have minimal adverse effects at labeled dosages; probably less nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity than other aminocyclitols.
  • Can cause neuromuscular blockade..

Withdrawal Time

5 days for chicken & Turkey

Storage conditions

At temperature not exceeding 30°C and Keep out reach of children.
