Chlortetracycline HCl                           21.60 gm

Equi. to Chlortetracycline base       20.00 gm

Properties:

  • Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate is a semi-synthetic diterpene antibiotic. The mode of action is by inhibition of ribosomal protein synthesis in sensitive bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic and the following organisms show sensitivity in vitro:
    • Brachyspira : Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, B. pilosicoli
    • Mycoplasmas : Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, M. hyorhinis, M. hyosynoviae, Ureaplasma spp., M. gallisepticum, M. synoviae, & M. meleagridis.
    • Gram-positive: Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Arcanobacterium pyogenes.
    • Gram-negative: Pasteurella spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteroides spp., Campylobacter coli, Lawsonia intracellularis
  • Chlortetracycline hydrochloride is a bacteriostatic antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline group, which acts by inhibition of protein synthesis.
    • Chlortetracycline has a Spectrum of activity that includes:
Most mycoplasma, spirochetes (including the Lyme disease organism), Chlamydia, and Rickettsia.
    • Gram-positive bacteria: Actinomyces spp., Bacillus anthracis, Clostridium perfringens and tetani, Listeria monocytogenes, and Nocardia.
    • Gram-negative bacteria: Bordetella spp., Brucella, Bartonella, Haemophilus spp., Pasturella multocida, Shigella, and Yersinia pestis.
    • Tiamulin and chlortetracycline showed a good synergistic effect when combined against avian mycoplasma, porcine mycoplasmas and some bacterial respiratory pathogens such as H. paragallinarum P. gallinarum and P. multocida.

Indications:

Broiler chicken and Turkeys:

  • For the reduction in the severity of disease caused by mycoplasmas.
  • For the treatment of colibacillosis secondary to infectious bursal disease, chronic respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enteridis, Salmonella typhimurium and Pasteurella multocida infections.

Pigs:

  • For the treatment of swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae and complicated by Fusobacterium and Bacteroides spp
  • For the treatment of respiratory diseases associated with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Steptococcus suis and toxigenic strains of Pasteurella multocida.

It is also used in the treatment of rhinitis due to Bordetella bronchiseptica and streptococcal meningitis due to Streptococcus suis type II.

Target species

Broiler chicken, Turkeys and Pigs

Dosage & Administration

Route of administration: Orally via drinking water.

Broiler chicken and Turkeys:

  • 100 gm Tiamochlor/200 liter drinking water daily for up to 5 days.

Pigs:

  • 0.5 gm Tiamochlor/20 kg body weight daily for up to 5 days

Warnings & Precautions

  • The feed should be tested for the ionophores prior to use.
  • If an interaction does occur, stop tiamulin water medication immediately and replace with fresh water, remove contaminated feed as soon as possible and replace with feed not containing the tiamulin-incompatible ionophores.
  • Don’t use this product as a feed additive.
  • Medicated water should be prepared daily and any unused water should be discarded safely.
  • Broiler chicken, turkeys and pigs should have access only to medicated water during treatment.
  • Absorption of Chlortetracycline from the alimentary tract is reduced by calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc salts

Contra Indications

  • Animals and birds should not receive products containing monensin, narasin or salinomycin during or for at least seven days before or after treatment because it may lead to Severe growth depression or death.

Side Effects

Normal dose :

  • On rare occasions erythema or mild oedema of the skin may occur in pigs following the use of tiamulin hydrogen fumarate.
  • Water intake may be depressed during the administration of tiamulin to birds.

Over dose:

  • The LD5 of tiamuline for chickens is 1290 mg/kg bodyweight and for turkeys 840 mg/kg bodyweight.
  • The clinical signs of toxicity in chickens are: vocalization, clonic cramps and lying in a lateral position. Symptoms in turkeys are: clonic cramps, lateral or dorsal position, salivation and ptosis.
  • If signs of intoxication do occur, promptly remove the medicated water and replace with fresh water.
